One of the most common calls we get in Tampa Bay goes something like this: "I've got a nice gate across my driveway, but I'm tired of getting out of the car to open it — can you just put a motor on it?" The short answer is usually yes. The longer answer is that automating a gate you already have isn't as simple as bolting on a motor and calling it done. The gate itself, the way it's built, and what's around it all decide whether the job goes smoothly or turns into a headache.
This is the walkthrough we give homeowners and property managers before we ever quote the work. None of it is meant to talk you out of automating your gate — it's meant to make sure the opener you add actually lasts and behaves the way you want.
First, Is Your Gate Built to Be Automated?
A gate operator doesn't gently nudge a gate — it drives it open and closed hundreds of times a month, in wind, heat, and rain. A gate that swings fine by hand can still be a poor candidate for a motor if it's the wrong weight, out of square, or hung on tired hardware. Before anything else, a technician looks at the gate's condition and construction.
- Weight and length. Every operator is rated for a maximum gate weight and leaf length. A heavy ornamental iron gate needs a stronger operator than a light aluminum one, and a slide gate that's too long for the motor will strain it until it fails early.
- How level and square it is. A swing gate that drags on the ground or sags at the latch will fight the operator every cycle. A slide gate needs a straight, level track. We often adjust hinges, rollers, or the track before we ever mount a motor.
- Hardware and welds. Rusted hinges, worn rollers, or cracked welds won't survive automation. It's cheaper to fix these up front than to have them fail with a motor pushing on them.
If the gate is in good shape, automation is straightforward. If it isn't, we'll tell you honestly — sometimes a little repair work first saves you from replacing an operator a year down the road.
Swing Gate or Slide Gate? The Operator Follows the Gate
The kind of gate you have decides the kind of operator you need, and each has its own quirks.
Swing gates
Swing gate operators come as either arm-style (a jointed arm that pushes the gate open) or in-ground/underground units. They're clean and quiet, but they need room to swing — the gate has to have a clear arc with nothing in the way, and it can't swing uphill against a rising driveway. If your driveway slopes up toward the gate, that's a real limitation we'll flag early.
Slide gates
Slide gates roll sideways on a track or on cantilever rollers, which makes them a great fit for short driveways or sloped entries where a swing gate has nowhere to go. They need clear space to the side for the gate to roll into, and a slide operator uses a chain or rack-and-pinion drive that has to be aligned properly to run smoothly.
Field Note
The single most common reason a newly automated gate acts up isn't the motor — it's the gate. We've been called out to "fix the opener" on gates that were never level to begin with. Once the gate itself swings or rolls freely and true, the operator has an easy job, and an operator with an easy job lasts for years. Get the gate right first.
Power, Solar, and Where the Wiring Goes
An operator needs power, and getting it to the gate is often the part homeowners don't think about. If your gate is close to the house or an existing electrical source, running a dedicated low-voltage or 120V line is usually simple. If the gate is at the end of a long driveway, that trenching becomes part of the job — and part of the cost.
When running power to the gate isn't practical, solar is a real option for lighter-use residential gates. A solar panel and battery pack can run a gate that cycles a handful of times a day. It's not a fit for a busy commercial or community entrance that opens hundreds of times daily, but for a home gate off the beaten path, it can save a small fortune in trenching. Safety Devices Aren't Extras — They're Required
This is the part some people are surprised by. Once you put a motor on a gate, you've created a machine that moves on its own, and UL 325 safety standards require that machine to have entrapment protection. A hand-operated gate has none of this because a person is always there controlling it. An automated one needs it built in.
- Photo eyes — beams across the opening that stop or reverse the gate if something breaks the beam, like a car or a child.
- Safety edges — sensing strips on the gate's leading edge that reverse it the moment it touches something.
- Proper force settings — the operator tuned so it stops pushing if it meets resistance.
A reputable installer won't leave these off, and honestly, you don't want them off. A gate that closes on a bumper — or worse — is exactly the outcome these devices exist to prevent. When you get a quote, safety devices should be on it.
How Do You Want to Open It?
The motor is only half the system. The other half is how you and your visitors get through. Adding an opener is the natural moment to think about access, and your options range from simple to full-featured:
- Remotes and keypads — the basics, perfect for a single-family home.
- Loop detectors — a sensor in the driveway that opens the gate automatically as you exit, so you never touch a button leaving.

Automating an existing gate is almost always cheaper than a full new gate installation, because the gate — the expensive part — is already there. What you're paying for is the operator, the safety devices, the access controls you choose, the electrical work, and the labor to tune it all in. The range is wide because those pieces vary so much from property to property. A short home gate near an existing power source is a modest job; a long driveway needing trenching, or a heavy commercial gate with full access control, is a bigger one.
