A stuck gate never picks a convenient moment. You're late for work and the slide gate won't budge, or you're getting home at 11 p.m. and the swing gate opens halfway and stops. Before you assume the worst — or pay someone to tell you a fuse was blown — here's how we actually diagnose a gate that won't open, in the order we check things on real service calls across Tampa Bay.

Start With the Simple Stuff

Is the operator getting power?

It sounds obvious, but tripped breakers are behind more "dead gate" calls than any actual hardware failure. Gate operators are usually on their own breaker, sometimes in a panel you rarely open. Check the breaker, check any GFCI outlet on the same circuit, and look for a power light inside or on the operator cabinet. Solar-powered operators have their own version of this problem: a few overcast days plus a tired battery equals a gate with no strength left.

Is it just your remote?

If the keypad or call box opens the gate but your clicker doesn't, the gate is fine — your transmitter battery is dead or the remote lost its programming. Try a second remote or the keypad before assuming the operator failed.

Is the manual release engaged?

Every operator has a manual release for power outages. If someone used it — a landscaper, a delivery driver, a family member during the last storm — and didn't re-engage it, the motor will run while the gate sits still. Re-engage the release and test again.

Safety Devices That Stop a Gate on Purpose

Modern gates are required to stop or reverse when they detect an obstruction. When those safety devices fail or drift out of alignment, the gate behaves as if something is always in the way — and refuses to move. If your gate starts and then stops, reverses on its own, or won't close at all, this is the most likely category:

Lightning and surge damage

Tampa Bay sees more lightning than anywhere else in the country, and a strike doesn't have to hit your gate to kill it — a surge traveling through the ground your wiring runs in is enough to fry a control board. If your gate died during or right after a storm and the simple checks above don't fix it, suspect the board. This is a diagnosis-and-repair job, not a DIY one.

Corrosion and salt air

Anywhere near the water — St. Pete, Gulfport, the beaches, Bradenton — salt air eats terminals, connectors, and hinges. Corroded connections cause intermittent faults that come and go with humidity, which is why a gate can work Monday and refuse to open Wednesday.

The track, the wheels, and the hinges

Mechanical problems announce themselves. A slide gate grinding, dragging, or derailing usually has debris in the track, a failing roller wheel, or a chain that's stretched or jumped. A swing gate that sags, scrapes the driveway, or shudders open has hinge wear or a failing actuator arm. Running the operator against a binding gate burns up the motor — if the gate is hard to move by hand with the release pulled, fix the mechanical problem first.

Field Note

The strangest repeat offender we find in gate control boxes? Fire ants. They nest inside enclosures and swarm across circuit boards, and their bodies bridge connections until the board fails. If your gate acts possessed and you're in Florida, it's worth opening the cabinet and looking — carefully — before assuming the electronics went bad on their own.

When to Call a Gate Repair Pro

Stop and make the call when you hit any of these: the control board shows fault lights or storm damage, the motor hums but the gate doesn't move, the gate binds when you move it by hand, a vehicle loop or buried wiring is suspect, or anything involves opening the high-voltage side of the operator. Gate operators combine line voltage, stored spring or battery energy, and several hundred pounds of moving steel — the repair bill for a wrong guess is a lot more than a service call.
