Here in Tampa Bay, hurricane season runs June through November — and your security system spends all of it outside. Gate operators, cameras, keypads, intercoms: it's all electrical equipment mounted in the open, in the part of the country that sees more lightning than anywhere else in North America. A little preparation before a storm is the difference between a system that keeps working and a repair bill on top of everything else you're dealing with.
This is the same checklist we walk through with our own clients every season. Most of it you can do yourself in an afternoon.
Your Automated Gate
Know your manual release — before you need it
When the power goes out, your gate doesn't open by itself. Every gate operator has a manual release — a key, lever, or crank that disconnects the motor so you can move the gate by hand. Find yours now, make sure the key is somewhere you can grab it, and practice using it once. Doing this for the first time in the dark during an outage, with a car full of family, is not the moment to learn.
Decide your storm position: open or closed
Most communities and businesses leave gates locked open ahead of a major storm. Emergency vehicles need access, residents evacuating shouldn't depend on a powered gate, and a gate slamming in the wind will destroy its own operator. If you manage an HOA or commercial property, put the open-gate decision in your storm plan with a name attached to it.
Test your battery backup
Gate operators with battery backup will run a limited number of cycles during an outage — but only if the batteries actually hold a charge. Backup batteries typically last 2–3 years in Florida heat, and most people never test them. Kill power at the breaker and cycle the gate. If it hesitates or fails, replace the batteries now, not in September.
- Clear debris and vegetation from the gate track and hinge points
- Check that swing gates latch positively and slide gates sit fully in their catchers
- Confirm your operator has surge protection — lightning is the #1 killer of gate boards in Florida
- Photograph your operator, control board, and settings for insurance and reprogramming
Your Security Cameras
Counterintuitive but true: a hurricane is when you want your cameras working most. Storm footage documents wind and water damage for insurance claims, shows exactly when damage occurred, and deters the looting that sometimes follows evacuations.
- Check mounts and seals. Give each camera a gentle wiggle — anything loose in 40 mph wind becomes a projectile in 110 mph wind. Look at cable entry points for cracked sealant.
- Trim branches near cameras and cable runs. Most storm camera damage we see isn't wind — it's a limb.
- Back up your footage off-site. If your recorder (NVR/DVR) is on-site and floods, your footage floods with it. Cloud backup or at minimum moving the recorder off the floor and away from windows matters.
- Put the recorder on a UPS (battery backup) so it rides through outages and keeps recording as long as possible.
Access Control & Cellular Entry Systems
Cellular gate entry systems like CellGate have a real advantage in storms — no phone line or landline internet to go down. But they still depend on two things: power at the unit and a functioning cell network. Cell networks can be degraded for days after a major storm, so don't make a cellular callbox your only way through a gate. That's another reason the manual release matters.
- Open control enclosures and check the gaskets — water intrusion kills more access control boards than wind ever will
- Verify keypads, readers, and intercom stations are mounted tight with sealed cable penetrations
- Export your user codes, fobs, and tenant directory so the system can be reprogrammed quickly if hardware is lost
Field Note
Tampa Bay is the lightning capital of North America, and a nearby strike doesn't have to hit your gate to fry its control board — it just has to hit the ground your wiring runs through. After the Storm
Don't just power everything back up. Before you re-energize a gate operator or camera system, do a visual check first:
- Look inside enclosures for standing water or moisture before restoring power — energizing a wet board destroys it
- Walk the gate's full travel path and clear debris before running a cycle
- Check safety devices — photo eyes, loops, and edge sensors — since a misaligned photo eye after a storm can leave a gate refusing to close
- Review your camera footage and photograph any damage before cleanup for your insurance claim
If anything looks damaged, waterlogged, or behaves strangely, stop and get it inspected. A gate operator that "mostly works" after a flood is often a board failure waiting for the worst possible moment.
